Root modification with examples?
Root modification :
- In some plants root change they shape and structure to perform functions. Other than absorption and conduction of water and minerals is called Root modification.
- The radicle of embro elongates leads to formation of primary root which grows into the soil is called Root.
- In angiosperms, two types of root system are present namely.
- 1.tap root system 2.fiborous root system.
- The primary root grows into soil called Tap root.
- Which produce lateral roots and roots lets constitutes tap root system.
- It is seen in Dicotyle-donous-plant.
- The primary root is a short lived and replaced by a large number of roots.
- Which originate from base of the stem constiuent Fibrous root system.
- It is seen in Monocotyledonous plants.
They are:
- Storage roots:
- In carrot, turnip(tap roots).
- Sweet potato(adventitious roots).
- Asparagus (Fibrous root).
- These plants are become swollen because due to storage of food materials called storage roots.
- In Banyan tree, Roots arise from the branches grow into the soil, become pillar like and give additional support called Prop roots or Pillar roots.
3.Stilt roots:
In Epiphytes like vanda, special avdentitious roots arise, help in absorption of moisture from atmosphere.
- In maize, sugarcane, roots arise from lower nodes of the stem, give additional support called Still roots
- In Mangroves like Rizophora and Avicennia, many roots come out of the ground and grow vertically upward, help in called Pnuematophores.
In Epiphytes like vanda, special avdentitious roots arise, help in absorption of moisture from atmosphere.
